Why we cannot have wonderful, beautiful cities, clean and well cared for streets, pure drinking water, practically free transport, pollution-free and noise free, practically free energy, communications, shelters too of high quality but low cost, pain-free agriculture and the rural areas too in no way less in standards of quality of living, every one well dressed, literate and well behaved? I believe we can. But why we could not achieve over the last 60 years of effort by some well-meaning people, and naturally very intelligent hard working people of India? We have good administrative services, a Police force with 150 years of experience, a free and fair election for choosing own representatives to make laws for us and also head the government to deliver, a truly world class judicial system and a written elaborate constitution, and free press and freedom of...

Even when we worked in the government, the inner urge to somehow circumvent the government to do things, we believe to be right and fair, is quite strong. There are some who confront head on, and the system simply throws him out as anti-bodies. There are some who get frustrated, and then resign to go out a do things , avoiding the government. Many IAS and IPS officers can be quoted as examples. But there is a third categoty, who continued in the government, used their smartness, camouflaged the things they want to do to fall within the acceptable limits of the government's perception, and did achieve results. Earnestness was not abandoned. The major difference is in private business, there are fewer peer members to be convinced and the over bearing dictatorial owner boss- once convinced , the earnest man gets through his proposals. The spreadsheet works here. But in the government, the peer group as well as the multi- tiered hierarchy, finally headed by a different class of people...

Now talking of deploying Army is fraught with lots of concerns. Army will also get demoralised soon. It stuck me as a genius whoever designed the F16... pilots have to be absolutely alert and true fighters remain agile every split second! Same way 'I' as pilot of our constant "restless brain" have got to be alert every split second , not to be led astray!
