Prahalad tops the list of the top 50 thinkers of the world

WoW I am truly fortunate to have had a personal interaction with this truly gentle soul !

It was in 2003 winter , if I recollect correctly, when Tie organisation was in Goa being addressed by Ministers of Govt.of Goa and the members were all in a seaside resort relaxing. Well I happened to be one of the invitees and that was the time I completed the Skybus full scale prototype , with the help of private funding, of a value of Rs 7 cr, with Ministry refusing support. WHen I was telling my story, the members including President of Tie and Prahalad got so excited that they wanted to visit the Margao station almost, 20 km away. But the function was still going on at the hotel and dinner was also an official one.

But they said let us go at night 10.30PM, when we could leave the hotel, to the consternation of a few better-halves, who did not want to join the late night outing.

But we did go. Till midnight we spent at the world's first Prototype stdying the deatils climbing even up in to the Skybus tracks overhead.

While describing the technology, I used the word Indian Technology, which Prahalad promptly corrected after seeing the entire set up and some penetrating questions, that I should not call it as Indian Technology, but it qualifies to be called world class technology !

It was past midnight by the time we reached back hotel, but I can distinctly recall the gentleman and the Tie group members absolute happiness and appreciation fo the effort that has gone into the technology.

Of course he was famous even then and after so many years, he reatining the tag as foremost thinker, is truly remarkable.

That night remains memorable to me, and a great inspiring time particularly being a person at that time suffering the ire of the Rly Board for what I did, even when funds and permission were denied for the Skybus.

God bless Prahalad-- hope his email box will not get cluttered agin like that of "Venki".

Biz Gurus: C K Prahalad still the most influential thinker

Experts rank management consultants and economists among the most respected gurus.

The 10 Most Influential Business Gurus Corporate strategy sage C.K. Prahalad is the most influential management thinker in the world, according to the Thinkers 50, a biennial ranking of business gurus.

Prahalad, who serves as the Paul and Ruth McCracken distinguished university professor of strategy at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, tops the list for the second time running.

Man who coined 'core competencies'

"C.K. Prahalad's influence on the business world is immense," said Des Dearlove, co-creator of the ranking, in a statement. "He coined the term 'core competencies' in the 1990s, which set the strategy agenda for a generation of managers. More recently, his work on The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid has shown the role business can play in tackling world poverty."

To create the list, leadership consulting firm CrainerDearlove surveyed 3,500 people around the world to identify the 100 most important business thinkers, and then consulted a panel of experts to rank the top 50. This is the fifth edition of the biennial list.

While Prahalad maintained his No. 1 slot from the 2007 edition, economic turbulence has significantly changed the rest of the ranking.

Nobel Yunus joins the tally

Thirteen thinkers make their first appearance on the list in 2009, including Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and author of Banker to the Poor. The economist surges on to the list in sixth place.

Names that have slipped off the list include Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, and former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, who ranked third in 2007. All together, only 19 members of the original 50 members of the list still make the cut.

Stuart Crainer, co-creator of the list and partner at CrainerDearlove, says this year's ranking illustrates the slipping influence of business school academics -- and the increasing influence of economists during the recession. Economists Paul Krugman (ranked third), Joseph Stiglitz (22nd) and Niall Ferguson (42nd) did not appear on the list in 2007.

"Managers are quite fickle," says Crainer. "They're looking for the next big idea all the time."
